Most buyers of green tea extract supplements choose based on the milligrams of EGCG printed on the label. If last month's bottle said 400 mg and this one says 500 mg, it looks simple. But the label shows what was in the extract when tested, not what will be active when you take the capsule. Sourcing decisions at this point can either protect or destroy the value of what you're buying.
EGCG Is Chemically Fragile by Nature
Epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG) - the main catechin in green tea that researchers study most - has multiple hydroxyl groups on its B and D rings. Those sites react easily with oxygen and light. A 2021 study on EGCG stability in water identified pH, light, heat, dissolved oxygen, and metal ion concentration as the principal drivers of degradation, with measurable loss even at temperatures below 25 degrees Celsius. EGCG oxidizes readily without metal catalysts, and alkaline conditions speed up the process.
This matters. An extract that's accurate at the factory can lose EGCG during shipping and storage. No supplement rule requires manufacturers to account for this degradation.
What a Study of 30 Commercial Extracts Found
A 2023 analysis in Foods used liquid chromatography to test flavan-3-ol levels in thirty commercial green, black, and white tea extracts over their shelf life. The key finding for supplement buyers: at the end of the labelled shelf life, most commercial extracts showed measurable decreases in flavan-3-ol content - the catechin class that includes EGCG - compared to label claims. All extracts lost content, just different amounts. Labels overstated what was actually in the bottle.
This isn't against the law. Labels show what was in the extract at the factory. A company using poor quality extracts or cheap packaging doesn't have to account for degradation during shipping. Buyers have to evaluate this themselves, or buy from a supplier that does.
The Concentrated-EGCG Paradox
The drive to maximize EGCG percentage has created a problem rarely mentioned. Whole-leaf green tea contains EGCG along with other catechins: epigallocatechin (EGC), epicatechin gallate (ECG), and epicatechin (EC). Those companion catechins are active compounds. The same 2023 analysis found that high EGCG achieved by removing other stabilizing flavan-3-ols made those products less stable. Stripping out the full catechin matrix to boost EGCG percentage removes compounds that protect EGCG from oxidation.
A supplement at 95% EGCG may actually deliver less real exposure than one at 45% EGCG with a full catechin profile. The protective matrix was stripped out just to make the percentage look bigger on the label.
What Standardization Means
Green tea extract labels often say standardized to X% EGCG or standardized to X% total catechins. Standardization means the batch was tested and adjusted to a certain standard. It doesn't tell you about the testing method, storage conditions, or when the test was done.
Two main testing methods exist. High-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) measures individual catechins by molecular weight. Colorimetric assays measure total polyphenols by color response to a reagent. HPLC is more specific. A label that says EGCG content without specifying HPLC testing may be measuring other compounds instead. For buyers who care about quality, a certificate of analysis from HPLC and verified by a third party is more reliable than just a percentage.
Packaging also matters. Light and oxygen degrade EGCG. Extracts in clear or loosely sealed bottles lose more EGCG than those in opaque or nitrogen-flushed containers. These choices make a real difference in what you get.
Doses Tested in Clinical Research
Studies on EGCG and energy metabolism have tested doses between 300 mg and 800 mg per day. A 2016 systematic review found that doses in the region of 300 mg per day were associated with a moderate increase in energy expenditure, but results varied between people. A separate 12-week study published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition used 282 mg per day of EGCG with resveratrol in overweight adults and found increases in mitochondrial capacity and fat burning. That study was published in 2016.
These numbers help when choosing a supplement. A supplement with 200 mg of stabilized, HPLC-verified EGCG probably works better than one claiming 600 mg from a poorly stabilized extract that sat in the heat during shipping. Within a reasonable dose range, the quality of what you get matters more than the number on the label.
How Food Timing Affects Bioavailability
Research shows that food reduces EGCG absorption. A study found that ingesting EGCG alongside food significantly inhibited its oral bioavailability compared to taking it on an empty stomach. People who ate had much lower blood levels. The researchers concluded that taking EGCG away from meals maximizes absorption. For more, see our article on green tea extract timing and cognitive focus.
Individual differences also matter. A nutrikinetic analysis found that maximum plasma EGCG concentrations varied more than six-fold between subjects, with genetic differences in drug transporters as one reason. A single benchmark dose that doesn't account for formulation quality or individual absorption doesn't tell the full story about exposure.
What to Look for When Choosing an Extract
When choosing a green tea extract supplement, look for: HPLC-verified EGCG content (not just a polyphenol total); a full catechin profile (not just the EGCG percentage); opaque or nitrogen-flushed packaging; a third-party certificate of analysis; and information about the extract's origin and how it was made.
